Prof. Ahmed Rafique Akhtar (born. 15 April 1941), is a notable Islamic scholar and sufi from Pakistan. A graduate of Government College, Lahore, he has been associated with teaching for years. Finally, he resolved to his small crockery shop in Gujar Khan, near Islamabad. There he started delivering lectures on different Islamic and philosophical topics and this eventually grew to such an extent that he had to travel all over the country and different places in the world. Institute of Research Promotion (IRP)
in collaboration with National Productivity Organization (NPO), Ministry of Industries, Production & Special Initiatives and Lahore Chamber of Commerce & Industry (LCCI), Lahore has planned a free seminar on “Prosperity through Competitiveness in Textile Sector” to address the issues of competitiveness in Pakistani textile sector. The seminar aims at analyzing the current state of textile sector, associated problems and potential of developing competitiveness through joint efforts of academia, industry and public sector in Pakistan. The seminar will provide a unique opportunity to interact with each other, share expertise and develop linkages for the prosperity of textile sector.

SEMINAR OVERVIEW

We need textile sector
The textile sector is considered as backbone of Pakistan Economy, having multidimensional impact. The development of various sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, export, import and within country trade is directly associated with the growth in textile. Technology upgradation, foreign reserve in terms of export, value-added manufacturing, large-scale employment, banking business and overall industrial progress are heavily dependent on the developments in textile sector.

We can win
Pakistan is one of countries, having the largest base in textile sector and the finest quality of cotton. The vast area of cotton cultivation reasonably cheep labor, suitable weathers and number of other God blessings gives competitive edge over other countries in the world.

Why we failed?
Inspite of all above-mentioned rosy pictures, textile industry is facing serous problems. The survival of industry is being questioned. Business intellectuals are expressing their doubts the stability of textile sector in the highly competitive market across the world. Numbers of questions in Pakistani textile sector are waiting for response like:
  1. Why innovation has not become the norm of this sector?
  2. Why value-addition process is so slow or out of concern?
  3. Why Pakistan is left behind by neighbor countries in textile market?
  4. Why image of Pakistan is not remarkable in the global market?
  5. Why advanced management practices are not allowed to enter our factories?
  6. Why profitability is so low or companies are operating in loss?
Proposed remedy
The research and development always have been the collaborative effort of academia, public and corporate sector. All the major breakthroughs in technology, social and pure sciences are the results of joint projects initiated by academia and funded by government and industry. The universities always pursued innovation with the close partnership of corporate and public sector as a change agent all over the world. Therefore, IRP believes that solution of textile sector problems lies in the academia, industry and public sector partnership. IRP has planned to hold a seminar on “Prosperity through competitiveness”: A role of academia, industry and government in textile sector. The seminar would primarily address the four major questions:
  1. What are the areas of concern in textile sector competitiveness, like export marketing, branding, technology upgradation, and value addition etc.?
  2. What is the role of Government to address the issues of textile sector?
  3. How academia can contribute to address the issues of textile sector?
  4. What is the responsibility of textile sector to get their problems solved?
  5. How this tripartite partnership can work in Pakistan?

Identifying a clear vision in life is critical towards personal and organizational success and excellence. A life without a vision is a life without a direction, a life full of confusions and contradictions…In the words of a teenager who took our Time Management workshop: “a life without a vision is not worth living!”

This 12-hour workshop is an introduction to the concept of vision and purpose. It talks about the need to have a clear vision and purpose and how not having this clarity places us and our organizations at a great risk. We talk about the fact that when we don’t plan for something that we want, we run a risk of getting something that we never wanted.

Furthermore we talk about the technicalities of developing a vision and purpose and some of the different functions of a vision like:
  • How having a vision gives us direction
  • How a clear vision gives us motivation and the ability to fight adversity
  • How a vision protects us from becoming a tool in someone else’s vision
  • How it helps to select our roles in life and helps us in our day to day decision making.
Also a discussion about the different dimensions of a vision like greatness, grandness, loftiness, clarity and correctness.

About the Presenter
Suleman Ahmer - The Lead Facilitator

To further his work and research in time management, Suleman founded Timerunners, Inc. in Chicago in 1999 and Timelenders, Inc. in Boston and Karachi in 2002. Later on he developed further courses in management and Timelenders has now grown to become a full fledged management consulting and training firm. He has trained thousands of individuals and many organizations and companies in the United States, the United Arab Emirates and Pakistan. The list of companies trained includes multinational giants like Pfizer, Philips, Nestle, Total, Siemens, Pakistan Navy, Baghlaf Al-Zafar Metal Industries and Higher Colleges of Technology Abu Dhabi. Suleman’s interest in the power of missions and visions to transform organizations has resulted in consulting work with groups both in the US and Pakistan. He has consulted with groups such as Macter Pharmaceuticals, Shafi Reso-Chem, Amreli Steels and Best Homes LLC UAE.

Suleman is an engineering graduate of the University of Nebraska and his research with the US Air Force in Solid State Physics culminated in published work. Suleman is an award winning author and has two works: the essence of his travel experiences are captured in ‘The Embattled Innocence’ published in the US and his current focus is ‘Strategic Time Management’, which also serves as course material for the ‘Strategic Time Management’ workshop.

Khurram Ali Shafique is currently working as a Research Consultant with Iqbal Academy Pakistan and his publications include such keystone works as The Republic of Rumi (2007), Iqbal: An Illustrated Biography (2006) and Stray Reflections: Allama Iqbal’s Private Notebook (2005; revision and annotation of the edition prepared by Dr. Javid Iqbal). He has also contributed more than 200 articles to the leading newspapers and journals of Pakistan including Dawn and Herald since 1992.

As a resource person Shafique has conducted training and developed curriculum for a number of educational institutions including Teachers’ Resource Centre, Aga Khan Education Service Pakistan and Beaconhouse Schools System. He has also taught at Hamdard Institute of Management Sciences and Indus Valley School of Art & Architecture.
